INSTRUCTORS PROFILE

Étude Dance Studio was founded by Joni Tan, who has been pursuing her passion for teaching ballet since 2007. Her mission is to nurture the love and appreciation for ballet in everyone, and believes that anyone can learn and enjoy this beautiful form of art, at any stage of their life. Joni acknowledges that everyone from aspiring young dancers to recreational adult dancers has different needs and abilities, and has specially tailored the teaching methodology to ensure that everyone enjoys the art of ballet at their own individual pace. At Étude Dance Studio, we offer the UK’s Royal Academy of Dance (RAD UK) syllabus for both children and adults, and also offer our own proprietary Adult Ballet Syllabus for adult learners.

Vanessa believes that the ultimate objective of dance is to possess the freedom to express oneself. Through her dedicated instruction, Vanessa hopes to equip everyone who walks through the studio doors with the ability and freedom to enjoy the power of expression that movement through dance can bring. To quote the famed American dancer, Martha Graham, “Freedom to a dancer means discipline. That is what technique is for: liberation”. Vanessa firmly believes that the rigor and control of classical ballet training lays a strong foundation for all dancers to utilise their bodies as instruments for all forms of genres and choreography. Classically trained in ballet since the tender age of 6, Vanessa continued to explore different forms of dance and movement, including street and contemporary dance. She was able to draw from her strong foundation in ballet and hopes to instill that same belief in her students in their dance journey.  To complement her teaching, Vanessa is also trained in Pilates. The mind-body connection in Pilates is a well regarded accompaniment to everyone, to maximise the potential of the body in everyday movements, functional fitness and dance. Vanessa is trained in the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus and has completed the RAD Vocational Advanced One examinations. She began her teaching career in 2015 and obtained the Certificate of Ballet Teaching Studies from the RAD in 2017. Vanessa is also a certified Pilates Instructor trained under the Pilates Academy International (PAI) and began teaching both Pilates Reformer and Matwork since 2016. Vanessa is also a graduate of Nanyang Technological University, where she obtained an Honours degree in Communication Studies.
